Ofsted became responsible for the registration and inspection of day care and childminding facilities in September 2001. Previously these services were undertaken by local authorities who set their own criteria.
In May 2001 the Department of Education and Skills published the first National Standards for under eights day care and childminding and provided a baseline of quality below which no assessed facility could fall.
Ofsted checks that day-care providers and childminders throughout England meet these national standards so that parents can be confident in the standard of childcare wherever they live.
